Who Has The Most FA Cup Winners Medals?

Ahead of the 2015/16 FA Cup semi-final between on Manchester United and Crystal Palace at Wembley on Saturday, we take a look at the players with the most FA Cup winners medals in history!

Patrick Vieira – Arsenal (1998, 2002, 2003, 2005), Manchester City (2011)

The only non-British player on this list, Patrick Vieira is widely regarded as one of the finest central midfielders to play in the Premier League. After winning the FA Cup 4 times with Arsenal, Vieira moved to Italy where he spent a season with Juventus, then the next three and a half with Inter Milan. He returned to England, joining Manchester City in 2009, and two years later he was being presented with his fifth winners medals, placing him in this list of players with the most FA Cup winners medals.

James Forrest – Blackburn Rovers (1884, 1885, 1886, 1890, 1891)

James Forrest claims his place on the list of players with the most FA Cup winners medals by managing to win the competition five times in seven years with his home-town club, Blackburn Rovers.

Arthur Kinnaird – The Wanderers (1873, 1877, 1878), Old Etonians (1879, 1882)

Lord Arthur Kinnaird played in a record nine FA Cup finals, however that is not the reason why he makes our list of players with the most FA Cup winners medals. He became a principal of the FA soon after his career finished, and aside from his record number of finals and incredible amount of FA Cup wins, he is famous for playing in every position, even playing as goalkeeper in an FA Cup final for The Wanderers, where he scored an own goal after stepping over the goal line.

Charles Wollaston – The Wanderers (1872, 1873, 1876, 1877, 1878)

Charles Wollaston was, in fact, the first ever player to win 5 FA Cup winners medals, and so he finds himself among those with the most FA Cup winners medals in history. He played in the inaugural FA Cup final in 1872, and scored in the second final a year later.

Ashley Cole – Arsenal (2002, 2003, 2005), Chelsea (2007, 2009, 2010, 2012)

Love him or hate him, Ashley Cole has the most FA Cup winners medals in the history of football; he is also the only player except for Patrick Vieira to have won 5 FA Cup winners medals since the 19th century. However, Cole bettered the Frenchman by winning the competition a further two times with Chelsea.

Crunch Time for Van Gaal

Manchester United face Derby County in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Pride Park tonight. After his side performing abysmally in recent weeks, the pressure is really being cranked up on Louis Van Gaal.

With Jose Mourinho seemingly waiting in the shadows to take the reigns at Old Trafford, the Dutchman cannot afford any slip-ups against the Championship high-flyers. United fans won’t be happy with a win in a similar vein to their victory, thanks to a last minute Rooney penalty, over Sheffield United in the the third round. What the fans want to see is positive attacking football, many have voiced their concerns about the constant back-passing and lack of attacking runs being made.

If Van Gaal wants to keep his position at the helm of one of the world’s most famous clubs, he will really have to change his mentality; for United fans, winning isn’t everything… they have been used to high-quality football for the last 20 or so years, and that quality has been pretty much non-existent since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

With the FA Cup seemingly United’s only realistic chance at a trophy this season, Van Gaal really has no room for error. He either wins this match, or the axe simply must fall on his head from the powers that be at Old Trafford.
